Hot Tips for Cooling Summer Flowers

As the temperature soars  there is no need to stop having cut flowers in the house even at the height of summer its still usually cooler inside than in the winter with toadies central heating systems.

If you buy your flowers from a florist they will usually have been conditioned but its best to repeat the process.

Using a sharp knife or scissors remove all the lower leaves from flowers and foliage's cut the stem at a forty five degree angle and place the flowers in fresh water in a clean vase. It may be necessary to sterilise the container / vase before hand to make sure there is no bacteria present which has a detrimental effect on the flowers .

Always use the cut flower food provided. Re cut and change the water daily if possible and place in an area out of direct sunlight.

Flowers that last especially well in the heat are those from tropical climates anthurium and strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) have a waxy texture that will retain the moisture.

Hints and Tips

Amaryllis using pot tape available from florist tape a ring of it just above the end of the stem to stop it from splitting upwards.

Bouvardia place the ends in boiling water for a few seconds before placing in a  vase

Carnations avoid placing in areas with fruit  as the gas they give off shortens the life of the blooms

Gerbras when you by your blooms ask the florist to wire them for you. Use very shallow water and Re cut the stems daily removing the whole area that has been immersed in the water.

Gentiana Gladioli and lizyanthus remove lower blooms as they fade  to encourage the higher ones to open

Lilies remove the steymens as soon as they open before the pollen forms on them. Preventing orange stains on carpets clothes etc.

Roses cut the stems underneath water every evening wrap them completely in newspaper and replace back into deep water overnight .This method will also straighten the heads should they wilt.

Using these tips you can have flowers inside your house even in the hottest weather.
